Parish History
Established in the 1840s, Christ Church was the first Episcopal church in Farmington. Services were initially held in people's homes until the church was completed in the center of Unionville in 1871. For many years, the church consisted of a small group of faithful, hard-working parishioners, wardens, vestry, and clergy but struggled to support itself. Christ Church became a mission aided by the diocese and occasionally shared a priest with Trinity Church, Collinsville, until the early 1950s.
Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, membership fluctuated. Trinity Church, Collinsville, and Christ Church, Unionville, slowly gained a stabilized membership, allowing them each to support a rector of their own by the early 1950s.
Christ Church moved its services to the auditorium of Avon High School, based upon the needs of the community and an abundance of Episcopal churches in the Farmington area and further south. The current building was built in 1963 after a family census of the town of Avon showed interest in a new church. The old building in Unionville was demolished in 1965.
In 1969, the nave was added. Later, in 1982, the education wing and parish hall were expanded, resulting in the current building seen today.
